Hawaii Independent Insurance Agents Association (HIIA)
Background
The Hawaii Independent Insurance Agents Association (HIIA) is a private trade association of independent property and casualty insurance agents statewide, most of which are locally owned businesses. HIIA was formed to represent the industry to the public as a professional and competent resource for insurance products and services.
Services Provided
In the past, a number of insurance reform measures have been introduced at the Hawaii State Legislature in reaction to both lawmakers and the publics negative perception of the industry. To address some of the widely-held misconceptions, PMCI was engaged to develop a multi-level communications program for HIIA. Some of the components of the program included: public awareness projects, community relations projects, and public education projects for consumers and legislators. A major objective of the public education component was to increase awareness of HIIA at the legislature as a stakeholder in insurance matters. To this end, PMCI continues to coordinate an annual legislative conference and seminar. Here, key legislators are invited to speak and meet with the membership to discuss potential issues of interest. During the legislative interim, PMCI works with the Insurance Division on certain regulatory issues.
